Suggest a powershell script to reset Windows with "Keep my Files" option using Microsoft Graph API

Hello Team,

I want to reset around 5k Windows devices with " Keep my Files" option using powershell script which uses Microsoft Graph API for Authentication as my devices were managed by Intune and Entra ID. I used some of the scripts but that is factory resetting my devices and I don't want to factory reset the devices.

Hi @Anonymous , I tested this on Hyper-V VM also but getting same result. On Azure as well as Hyper-V VM devices are getting factory reset. We just want to reset our devices with "Keep My Files" option either using Graph API or any powershell script or single line command. Can anyone help me in this??

To perform a "Keep my Files" reset using PowerShell and Microsoft Graph API, the most reliable approach is to leverage Windows Autopilot Reset via Intune. The Graph API itself triggers a full factory reset, and there's no direct way to specify "Keep my Files" using Graph API alone. Use Autopilot Reset, which preserves user data while resetting the device. This must be configured in Intune and requires the device to be enrolled in Autopilot. For individual machines, you can use the systemreset -cleanpc command, but this needs to be run locally on each machine, not remotely. For a large-scale deployment of 5,000 devices, you will need to ensure that the devices are enrolled in Autopilot and apply an Autopilot Reset policy via Intune.

Our requirement is to re-enroll our Windows devices from one Entra and Intune tenant to another tenant, but as devices are Autopilot devices so we are getting error while migrating our devices from one to another tenant so Microsoft support suggested us to reset our AP devices before migrating it to another tenant.

As per your comment if we will use Autopilot reset option from Intune then devices will be enrolled to existing tenant even after resetting it but we need to un-enroll our devices along with resetting it to re-enroll the devices to new tenant.

Please suggest any way to do this, thanks!

@Anonymous , I tested this suggested command " systemreset -cleanpc" and its retaining user data while resetting my pc but all the apps were removed. Could you please let me know any other command to retain the Win32 Apps along with user data while resetting my pc? Running the command locally would also work for me.

I also tried to test "AutoPilot Reset' option from Intune but that option is blur for me somehow even after I'm using Autopilot Hybrid device to test this feature from Intune console.
