SQL DB Backup still going on

I am using VM for backup of 450GB data from SQL DB and, I have used Export Data-tier Application option in the Tasks menu because In SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) the backup option is not showing.

The backup process going on for last 15hours

Is there any way to know how much % of data is backed up. I don't see anything in SSMS there.

Also, I am unsure about speed as well. Any suggestions on how to take full backup manually.

SQL Backup Percentage Complete using SSMS GUI

Open SSMS, right click on a database then select Tasks > Back Up. A screen similar to the below image will open. After you select all of the backup options and click OK, you can monitor the progress on the lower left side of the GUI as shown in the below image. This will give you an idea of the status of the backup.

I am not getting any backup option from tasks menu.

Thanks for your update! I understand you're having trouble monitoring the backup progress and also not seeing the backup option in SSMS.

Here are some things you can try:

Since you're not seeing the backup option in SSMS, it might be hidden or there could be an issue with the version of SSMS you're using.

Try this: Restart SSMS to see if the options appear. Also, make sure you're connected to the right SQL Server with the correct permissions to do the backup.

If the option is still missing, you can try using a T-SQL script to back up your database.

If you're using Export Data-tier Application and can't see the backup progress, you can use a T-SQL script to see the backup status. Here's a script that shows progress:

BACKUP DATABASE [YourDatabaseName] TO DISK = N'C:\YourBackupLocation\YourBackupFile.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'YourDatabase-Full Database Backup', STATS = 1;

This will show you the progress of the backup in SSMS every 1%.

If you're using Export Data-tier Application to back up, this process doesn’t show progress as a percentage in SSMS. But you can check the SQL Server Error Logs to see if there’s any information about the backup’s status.

If the backup has been running for a long time (like 15+ hours), make sure there’s enough disk space and system resources (like CPU and memory) available for the process to run smoothly.

If the above options aren’t helpful, you can set up a SQL Server Agent Job to run the backup. This will allow you to see the backup status as it progresses.
