How can we effectively monitor the availability of a server that does not permit ICMP (ping) access? Are there alternative monitoring methods, such as utilizing SNMP, WMI, agent-based monitoring, or application-layer health checks, that can provide reliable availability data in such scenarios? Additionally, could you provide guidance on the best practices for implementing these methods to ensure minimal latency and accurate monitoring results.

    Hi,

    Yes, you can monitor server availability in SCOM without ICMP access.

    Agent-Based Monitoring: SCOM can monitor servers using agents installed on the target machines. These agents communicate with the SCOM management server over TCP port 5723, which doesn't require ICMP

    Agentless Monitoring: If installing an agent isn't possible, SCOM can use a proxy agent on another computer to gather performance and availability data
