In-Place Upgrade for Server 2022 Azure Edition

Hi guys

Has anyone ever tried an in-place upgrade of a windows server azure edition?

I have a Windows Server 2022 Azure Edition Virtual Machine that I would like to upgrade to Server 2025. If I add the ISO of Server 2025 as a disk to the server the "Keep files, settings, and apps" option is always greyed out.

I guess it could be a problem because I can't choose Server 2025 Azure Edition but I did not find any documentation on how to get the installation files for that.

Any help would be greatly apreciated

Hello Nicole,

The guidance for upgrading Azure VMs to a later version of Windows Server using an in-place upgrade can be found at: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/windows-in-place-upgrade.

However, I don't see Windows Server 2025 listed in the list of upgrade requirements at this time. I am reviewing to see if this documentation will be updated for Windows Server 2025.

Thanks for reviewing. I did add the disk to my azure vm as documented in the documentation you linked. But sadly I cannot find the sku for Windows Server 2025 Azure Edition. I guess the in-place upgrade for azure edition is not yet supported.

At this time the Windows Server 2025 Azure Edition SKU is not available, and in-place upgrades to Windows Server 2025 for Azure Edition are not supported.

Hi @Anonymous Do we have an ETA for when Windows Server 2025 Azure Edition SKU will be available in Azure? We have the same issue as the original poster.

There has been no official announcement or timeline from Microsoft regarding Windows Server 2025.
