How do I set the MS Word header section that changes with each chapter number?

When selecting Insert the header section I need to change it to show each applicable chapter number of the book when entered but all pages of the book have the same header. When I change the chapter # all previous headers change to the current entry. I need to know how to separate them.

Sounds like you are just putting something like Chapter 1 directly into the header. This raw text will be shown on all pages. If you want dynamic data then you need to use a field.

    1. In the header area where you want the dynamic data to go select the Document Info option in the ribbon bar
    2. Select Field
    3. Select StyleRef
    4. Under the field properties select the heading style (or any style really) that you want to show in the header/footer
    5. Close out the dialog and the header should show up

    Some caveats here.

    1. If you want to put this into a footer then you'll likely need to select the field option to look backwards on the page so it'll find the style earlier on the page
    2. It will use the title from the style you select, if you don't want that then you may need to use sections instead
    3. Not sure what happens if you have multiple chapters on a page since it can only show one
