I have been fighting an SQL Express 2019 Install on Windows 11 home for a few days. It all of a sudden stopped working and now I cannot get it to reload. I am not sure if Microsoft pushed out an update but I have 2 computers with the exact same issue both On Windows 11 home. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling, removing all virus protection and every trick I can think of. Does anyone have any clue on how to fix this? I have gave full permissions to both of these files. See log below.

2025-02-07T21:46:01.62+00:00 I would be lying if I said that I have any sort of clue, because I haven't. I've seen these log files before where a file which should be there is missing. But this particular file is new to me in this context.
Did you check the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL15.TRACSSE\MSSQL\Binn to see if there are any *sqlctr.ini files in this folder?
Did this error occur on the first attempt? You said that you've made multiple attempts with installing and uninstalling. You also say "suddenly stopped working". What was working before it stopped?

2025-02-08T19:38:34.5033333+00:00 Yes all the files are in that folder. I have gave full permissions to the files and nothing works. It was working fine then stopped and haven't been able to get it to reload since.

2025-02-08T21:26:09.9233333+00:00 SQL Server was working fine. My theory is a Windows update ran and broke SQL Server on Windows Home 11. I tried removing SQL server and cannot get it to reinstall.

2025-02-08T22:00:35.7933333+00:00 I would guess that you made an unclean uninstall. Trying to give suggestions without access to the machine is very difficult. It would still be difficult with access to the machine, I guess.
Some people have reported success after having followed the procedure in this article: https://www.sql-easy.com/learn/how-to-uninstall-sql-server/
But it may be better to install a virtual machine and run SQL Server on the VM. You physical laptop may be too messed up by now.

2025-02-10T21:45:52.7033333+00:00 At this point, it is definitely time to start looking at virtual machines. There is certainly a hurdle to get started. But if you aim at being a developer, this is a technology that is very useful to master in itself.
