Why do email windows stay open when the email has been deleted?

When I click an new email notification, it opens a new window.

When I click a link in the email, it opens edge.

When edge opens it shows me the email in the side pane.

When I am done with the email, I delete the email via the side pane or close the pane if I need to keep it.

The issue is, the outlook email window is still open for an email I'm done with.

There are two ways this could be fixed:

  • Allow me to change clicking a notification to open the email in the main window rather than a new window
  • Auto-close email windows when the associated email is deleted

This is for Outlook 2412 (Classic, not 'new' since that doesn't support client-side rules)

    Hi @Lewis Smith

    Welcome to our forum!

For a better study, please provide more details about this case:

    Has this problem persisted?

After deleting messages, do deleted emails reappear after being deleted from the Deleted Items folder?

According to my tests, when a message is deleted from the message preview pane, it automatically jumps to the next message. However, if this message opens a new window, the message in the new window is not deleted.

Additionally, there may be a known issue after updating to version 2412 (Build 18324.20168). Classic Outlook may crash when starting a new email, or when replying or forwarding an email. Please try the fixes in the article: Classic Outlook crashes on reply and forward - Microsoft Support
