Getting an error that says the specified network password is not correct on windows 11 home

On windows HOME 11 24H2 surface pro connecting to a win 11 23H2 dell laptop, I can see the shared folders but when I click on the shared folder the error message says the specified network password is not correct. I've gone through the windows network settings to turn off authentication and still getting the popup credential window from the surface pro. The dell laptop sees all the map folders and can perform CRUD in the folders.

I've done the regedit setting and that doesn't work. I've deleted all the username and passwords in the credential manager. That doesn't work either.

Tried using the admin username and password created in the credential manager of the dell laptop but still an error that the password is wrong. Tried using my windows 11 logon password and that is wrong too. I've put the server name and user name in the user field but still password error.

This was working before the update to 24H2. Anyone know how to turn off the "enter network credentials" window when clicking on a shared folder?

BTW was told to wait until Dell updates the laptop to 24H2 so windows sharing works. That's not the right solution. MSFT should do a proper QA so that downward compatibility contines to function.

    Hello

Thank you for posting in Q&A forum.

Here are a few steps you can try:

    1. Enable Insecure Guest Logons:

    • On both the Surface Pro and the Dell laptop, press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter to open the Group Policy Editor.

    • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Lanman Workstation.

    • Double-click on Enable insecure guest logons and set it to Enabled.

    • Restart both devices.

    2. Disable SMB Signing:

    • On both devices, open the Group Policy Editor again.

    • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options.

    • Find Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always) and set it to Disabled.

    • Restart both devices.

    3. Check Network Discovery and File Sharing Settings:

    • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings.

    • Ensure that Network discovery and File and printer sharing are turned on for both devices.

    4. Create Matching User Accounts:

    • Create a user account on the Dell laptop with the same username and password as the one on the Surface Pro. This can sometimes resolve credential issues.

    5. Direct Access:

    • Try accessing the shared folder directly by typing \[IP address of Dell laptop] in the File Explorer address bar on the Surface Pro. If prompted, enter the username and password for the Dell laptop.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Daisy Zhou

I had this same problem some time back with Win10, and it just happened again after upgrading (?) to Win 11. If you sign in to the target machine using a PIN, for some reason it will not accept an initial login from another machine with the correct MS account credentials. If you sign out and then sign in again on the target machine using your MS account credentials (select I forgot my PIN and go from there), access to the share then works. Use of the PIN in subsequent logins on the target machine doesn't bother it once you've gotten the credentials set.
