azuredeploy.json and Visual Studio Code ARM extension throw syntax errors

Question

The instructions are not up-to-date with the state of VSC and Azure ARM extension. The recommendation and the guidelines to use ARM template goes against the message displayed by ARM extension (essentially "do not use it, we will maintain it, but go and use bicep"). The syntax error at the very beginning at the exercise (deploy the minimal template, attempt to insert storage resource) make the whole rest of the chapter (further enhancing the template) useless.
