Sleep Function Broken - Display Screen Won't Turn Back On (Win10 & Win11)

We have run into a major issue with Windows 11 & Windows 10 laptops having problems with the Sleep wake function that just started happening on our HP EliteBooks, HP ProBooks, Microsoft Surface Books, Microsoft Surface Laptops. The issue is that when the laptops are put to sleep, when attempting to wake the machine either by lifting the lid, pressing keyboard/mouse the display screen will not activate at all, it stays pitch black indicating the display is not turning on. Keyboard lights turn on but display screen is not turning on. This started happening around the time of the September mid month patches but some machines either did not receive the patches yet, or some laptops did and still have this issue.

I have gone through MANY known troubleshooting tips and all have failed. Only true resolution is to perform a reset on the laptop, but having to this for potentially 100 machines is an undertaking. Not sure what is getting fixed by a OS reset that even an SFC, CHKDSK or DISM can't fix. I've gone through updating graphics drivers, BIOS, pretty much everything and still have this issue with the Sleep function not waking up the display.

Has anyone else been experiencing this lately? What would just randomly cause Windows to no longer properly wake the display screen from Sleep?

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

Based on the description, I understand your question is related to wake up from sleep.

Try check the power options on the machine:

Click on Start , then select Settings  > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.

If you’re using a desktop, tablet, or laptop, select Choose what the power buttons does. Next to When I press the power button, select Sleep, and then select Save changes.

If you’re using only a laptop, select Choose what closing the lid does. Next to When I close the lid, select Sleep, and then select Save changes.

When you’re ready to make your PC sleep, just press the power button on your desktop, tablet, or laptop, or close your laptop’s lid.

On most PCs, you can resume working by pressing your PC's power button. However, not all PCs are the same. You might be able to wake it by pressing any key on the keyboard, clicking a mouse button, or opening the lid on a laptop. Check the documentation that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer's website.

If devices connected to your PC (like monitors, printers, or scanners) aren't working properly after waking up from sleep or hibernate, you might need to disconnect and reconnect your device or restart your PC. You should also make sure that you have the most current drivers for all of your devices.

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards,

    Molly
