Hi,

I am reaching out because I am experiencing critical issues after installing the Windows Update KB5048671.

Problem Description:

  1. Update Failure:
The installation of KB5048671 fails at 30%, after which the PC restarts and shows a BSOD with the following message:
    • Your PC needs to be repaired
    • File: \windows\system32\winload.efi
    • Error Code: 0xC000000D
  2. Event Viewer Log:
The Event Viewer shows the following error:
    • Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F0845: KB5048671.
  3. Automatic Repair Failure:
Upon reboot, Windows attempts an automatic repair, which also fails with the following details:
    • Log file: C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt
    • Root cause: Boot Manager failed to find OS loader.
  4. System Information:
    • Windows Version: Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB, x64-based system
    • Main Components:
      • Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V
      • Graphics Card: ASUS GT 620
    • All drivers are up to date, but no new updates have been available since 2017.
  5. Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
I have already attempted the following:
    • Disabled all automatic updates and driver updates.
    • Reset the Windows Update cache.
    • Tried manually installing KB5048671 from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
    • Used bootrec and bcdboot commands via the Windows installation media to repair the bootloader.
    • checked the hard drive (confirmed to be functional).
    • None of these actions have resolved the issue.

Request for Assistance:

I kindly request your help with the following:

  1. Providing a corrected version of the update or a solution to successfully install KB5048671.
  2. Additional guidance for further diagnostics or repair steps to resolve this issue.

Thank you for your support!

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

Based on the description, I understand your question is related to BSOD when installing update.

Try run below commands to help fix:

    net stop wuauserv

    net stop cryptsvc

    net stop bits

    net stop msiserver

    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

    ren C: \Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

    net start wuauserv

    net start cryptsvc

    net start bits

    net start msiserver

Close Command Prompt and reboot your PC.

Then, instead of installing KB5048671, there is a newly released update for server 2016 in January, try install KB5049993:

    January 14, 2025—KB5049993 (OS Build 14393.7699) - Microsoft Support

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards,

    Molly

    Hello Molly,

Thank you for your response and the suggested solution. I have already tried the recommended steps, but unfortunately, they did not resolve the issue. The problem also occurs when trying to install KB5049993 on Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB.

Do you have any other suggestions to address this issue?

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Hello,

Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.

Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Next, under Get up and running, select Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter.

When the troubleshooter is finished running, it's a good idea to restart your device.

    Best regards

    Molly
