Hello, since many days i am unable to install Windows Update on our Windows Server 2022 DataCenter. Error is 0x80073701. Tried many methods mentioned by different people but still no luck.

Below are few links which i have already tried without success.

Additional resources for Windows Update - Windows Client | Microsoft Learn

Windows update fails with an error (0x80073701)

Tried the usual troubleshooting tips:

•Restart

•Reset Windows Update Components

•DISM Restore health ( failed with Error 1392 ) (even with a different source ISO)

•sfc scannow (Windows Resource Protection could not complete the requested operation)

•Windows Update Troubleshooter

•Tried manually updating by downloading the KB5012170, KB3025096, KB5034613 from Microsoft Catalog but still failed.

Any other solution that could solve the problem will be greatly appreciated.

Regards and Thanks in advance.

    Hello Hotshot434,

0x80073701 = ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING which means there are some system files are missing, which caused the update installation failure. Since you have run some general repair commands but nothing works, it is recommended considering a repair install by running setup.exe from the root of the install. If it still can't resolve this issue, you can try a repair installation by the following steps:

    1. mount Windows ISO again and run setup.exe.
    2. under "Change how Setup downloads updates" > select "Not right now".
    3. select "Keep all data" and install Windows.
    4. install all updates.

    Hope it helps.

    Best regards,

    Lei

    Hi Lei,

I tried and it took a while to finish. After completion there was an error again but in windows updates it said you are up to date. Will keep watching for next few days.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion.

    Regards,

    Atif

    Hi Lei,

So basically, re-install server? I'm assuming it will remove all previously installed software?

    Hello,

a repair installation typically reinstalls the operating system without affecting your personal files, settings, and installed programs. However, it is always recommended to back up your important data before performing any repair installation, as there is always a risk that something might not go as planned.
