Outlook on Windows Server

Not sure how I can phrase this properly, but here goes:

I have a VM running Windows Server 2016, and I need to install Outlook 2016/2019 to it, to be able to receive email alerts from a third party log listener for an application running on the server.

Couple of concerns:

  • Am I able to perform the outlook installation on the server?
  • I will be utilizing the 'Run a script' rule on Outlook to download the emails and attachments to a folder. I am able to do this successfully on PCs with outlook, but how about on a server? Does this mean I will constantly need an account to be kept logged in on the server, since I need outlook to be running all the time?

Thanks for the help.

Regards,

GQZQ

Correct. Outlook needs to be open and running to use a run a script rule.

    Hi Diane,

Thanks for responding. To confirm, I cannot sign out of the VM at all, and have to stay logged in with the windows account in question. And if somehow the VM went into reboot after maintenance, I would need to log back into the server with the account and run outlook.

    Regards,

    Hello GQZQ,

You can do it. You will need the account logged in and Outlook open and running.
