Storage Migration Service on Server 2022 fails to inventory some folders and also

Hi

we have 2 file server migrations in progress.

Both new servers have server 2022 installed. Source Servers are Server 2016.

  • First file server, shows "Couldnt inventory" on one folder out of 5 folders, the other 4 folders show as succeeded. we also see "24 Failed Folders" on this folder that shows "Couldnt inventory"
  • Second file server completes Validation sucesfully and scan sucesfully of all folders and files with no issues detailed at all. However when we then select to transfer, we see lots of failed files. Looking in the logs in WAC, i see "Failed to get file handle". There are lots of files that have transferred sucesfully so this is only happening on some files (17,000 Files failed out of a total of 2,892,744 files) Event log shows Event ID 1000, Couldnt create transferinformation object for D:.... Error: (-2147467259) Failed to get file handle. Event log also shows Event ID 1000, Transfer error for (5) Failed to get File Handle

Is there a way to have a consolidated view of all failed folders so the list details just the folder locations of the 17,000 files so then we can look into maybe permissions on them folders? Ideally we would want to see that 5k files are in C:\Users then 10k files are in D:\Data\Help for example so this will help to narrow down then troubleshooting as with 17,000 files and all them logs it will be impossible to go through and identify all affected files.

Thanks,

    Hi Admin,

    Hope you're doing well.

Here are some steps you can try:

    1. Ensure that all necessary firewall ports are open and that the Storage Migration Service requirements are met.
    2. Check the event logs for detailed error messages and review the error log in Windows Admin Center (WAC) to identify specific folders and files that are causing issues.
    3. Verify the access permissions for the folders and files that are failing to inventory or transfer. Ensure that the migration user account has the necessary permissions.
    4. Consider using a PowerShell script to gather and consolidate the list of failed folders and files. This might help you identify patterns and narrow down the troubleshooting.

Let me know if you need any more information or help!

    Best Regards

Hello @Xu Gu, thanks for the reply.

    1. Yes firewall ports are all open as over 90% of files have transferred sucesfully.

    2. Please can you let me know the best windows event logs to look for in event viewer? I have looked at event log in WAC Storage Migration service however as there's 17,000 failed files its not practical to look through them all

    3. Yes we believe the account has enough privileges, however once we can find a way to consolidate the failed files into a simple list of folders we can then check those folders however need a way to get a consolidated list. PowerShell seems the answer, however we need to know what the script is to do this?

    4. Yes PowerShell is the answer i believe however we dont have a script, can you help with this?

    Thanks,
