Windows 11 - network issue - previous response Rosy Yuan 27 May 2024

Hi, I have two Windows 11 pc networked via ethernet cable. Both have WD Green SN350 drives (A 1TB and a 2TB). Every time there is a major upgrade 2 things happen.

  1. One pc refuses to start and I need to use a recovery drive and set it as first boot option on the 2TB machine.
  2. Both pcs lose the network and ask for credentials manager details or just refuse to respond.

The only way I get them to see each other is a) disable credentials manager and b) enable insecure guest login via Lanman workstation.

I got this from a response by Rosy Yuan MS agent May 27 2024. It solves the issue BUT why does it keep happening?

Thanks

Barry

    Hello,

Because enabling guest login can pose a security threat, it allows:

Attackers to trick users into connecting to spoofed malicious servers without generating credential errors or prompts.

Execute malicious code (such as ransomware) through guest login.

Guest login is vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks that can expose sensitive data on the network.

So by default, Windows disables insecure guest login. For details, you can refer to the following link:

Enable insecure guest logons in SMB2 and SMB3 for Windows client and Windows Server | Microsoft Learn

    Best Regards

I'm afraid not. I have used two network pc for 45 years with no problem now it's not easy to understand.

Is there a simple guide that says

To network 2 pcs using Windows credential manager do this on PC 1 and this on PC 2?

    Thank you

    Barry
