Does the Volume Shadow Copy Service rename the Shadow Copy Index File each time it runs?

I am troublshooting an issue with backups in conjunction with our backup provider. The Shadow Copy Index File located in the System Volume Information folder is being renamed each time their software runs a backup which uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service. The name is a number then the standard Shadow Copy Index File name in brackets. E.g. 26 {3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752}. The number at the start of the name increases by 1 each time a backup runs. Their support has required me to reach out to Microsoft and find out if the Shadow Copy Index File automatically renames itself each time it is used, as they do not know at this stage whether it is the Volume Shadow Copy Service or their software renaming the file. This issue is occuring on systems running Windows Server 2016 and later.

Is anyone able to confirm if this renaming is or is not caused by the Volume Shadow Copy Service?

    Hi Paul,

    Hope you're doing well.

As far as I know, the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) itself does not automatically rename the Shadow Copy Index File each time it is used. This behavior is not typical for VSS and might be caused by the backup software you are using.

    Best Regards
