hi all

we are a non profit so we have via a local organisation access to cheaper non profit pricing but i'm a bit lost in what to get since it's been a very long time since i deployed any kind of windows server

i basically need to set up a local server to run some of our accounting software , and i would like to be able to remote desktop into it in order to do maintenance

apart form the admin user no other user needs remote desktop access

would i be correct in assuming that one

Windows Server Standard licence

and one Windows Remote Desktop Services – User CAL

would be all i need ?

kind regards

wouter

Hello wouter Simons1,

yes, you are right. But let’s clarify a few details to ensure you have everything covered:

  1. Windows Server Standard License: This will give you the license to install and run the Windows Server operating system on your server hardware.
  2. Windows Remote Desktop Services (RDS) – User CAL: A User CAL (Client Access License) is indeed required for each user that will connect to the server using Remote Desktop Services. Since you mentioned that only the admin user needs remote desktop access, one User CAL should suffice for this purpose.
  3. Windows Server CALs: Besides the RDS User CAL, you'll also need Windows Server CALs for users or devices accessing the server services. This ensures compliance with licensing requirements for users accessing the server in any capacity.

Hope it helps.

Kind regards,

Lei
