How to setup hyper V on a windows server 2022 to limit users access to host os desktop to avoid changing roles and rules

Hi,

I have a WIN2022 based server to host multiple VMs for multiple users. I want to configure hyper V in a way that users connected thru RD sessions can only access hyper V to run VM of their need. I have seen this setup in an older version that whenever server boots it goes directly to hyper V with a list of all the configured VMs and to access host OS primary desktop, you need to login as an administrator. Appreciate your time and support. Thanks

Regards,

RH

    Hi RH,

    Hope you're doing well.

    1. Ensure that the Hyper-V role is installed on your Windows Server 2022. You can install it through Server Manager or PowerShell.
    2. Create and configure the virtual machines that users will access. Set up the VMs with the required operating systems and configurations.
    3. Install the Remote Desktop Services role and configure it to allow users to connect through Remote Desktop.
    4. Ensure that users have the necessary permissions to access the Hyper-V Manager.
    5. Instruct users to connect to the server using Remote Desktop and provide them with the necessary credentials. Users should be able to see and manage their VMs using Hyper-V Manager.
    6. In addition, if you want to restrict access to the host OS primary desktop, ensure that only administrators have access to it. Users connecting via RD sessions should only see the Hyper-V Manager.

    Hi Xu Gu,

Thanks for detailed step by step reply. Appreciate your time and support. I am new to server OS so might be asking some noob questions.

    1. Ensure that the Hyper-V role is installed on your Windows Server 2022. You can install it through Server Manager or PowerShell. (Completed)
    2. Create and configure the virtual machines that users will access. Set up the VMs with the required operating systems and configurations. (Completed)
    3. Install the Remote Desktop Services role (Completed) and configure it to allow users to connect through Remote Desktop. (Not sure how to do that)
    4. Ensure that users have the necessary permissions to access the Hyper-V Manager. (Not sure how to do that)
    5. Instruct users to connect to the server using Remote Desktop and provide them with the necessary credentials. Users should be able to see and manage their VMs using Hyper-V Manager.(Noted, I can RD server with Admin rights, user created but unable to login to any user even directly from the server)
    6. In addition, if you want to restrict access to the host OS primary desktop, ensure that only administrators have access to it. Users connecting via RD sessions should only see the Hyper-V Manager. (Not sure how to do that)

    Thanks,

    RH
