Windows Server Standard 2022 21HD fails to install KB5036909

I run a Windows Server 2022 21HD remotely.

It has not been able to update to KB5036909. I have been trying every days since April 9th.

All other updates get installed with no problems.

    Hi Sergio Torres4,

    the error 0x80073701 usually indicates that the system files are corrupted or missing.

    In order to fix it, you can try the following steps:

    1. Run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to repair system files. Open a command prompt (administrator privileges), type "sfc /scannow" and press enter. Wait for the scan to complete and restart your computer.
    2. Run a Deployment Image Service and Management Tool (DISM) scan to repair the system image. Open a command prompt (administrator privileges), type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" and press enter. Wait for the scan to complete and restart your computer.
    3. Reset the Windows components by following the steps in Additional resources for Windows Update - Windows Client | Microsoft Learn.
    4. If the above steps don't resolve the issue, try downloading and installing the KB5036909 manually. Here is the link: Microsoft Update Catalog.

    I tried and this happened:

    2. Run a Deployment Image Service and Management Tool (DISM) scan to repair the system image. Open a command prompt (administrator privileges), type "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" and press enter. Wait for the scan to complete and restart your computer. Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool Version: 10.0.20348.681 Image Version: 10.0.20348.2227 [==========================100.0%==========================] The restore operation completed successfully.       	The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service is not started. 
      
      	Opened Services and it said it was running. 
      
      	Right clicked it and offered me to start it ? I started it again 
      
      net stop bits

      net stop wuauserv
      	The Windows Update service is not started. 
      
      	I started it from services and again

      	The Cryptographic Services service is stopping. 
      
      	The Cryptographic Services service was stopped successfully.

    I decided to stop here and start the cryptographic, windows update, and BIT services.

    When I tried net start cryptsvc

    The requested service has already been started.

    I installed updates today and found in update history that the Cumulative Update 2024-04 was successfully installed

    But later it said the cumulative update was being installed

    And finally it said installation failed

    I also saw this, and similar conditions.

    in a way it makes sense: once the Fix is installed, it fails to install again.
    What seems broken there is that the update remained queued after install.

    At present the KB5036909 is installed on our server and associated vulnerabilities no longer appear in Exposure Management platform.

    This was after

    Reset-WUComponents

    Which unfortunately removes the previous history of the patch;

    and several iterations of:

     DISM /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth

    or

    sfc /scannowand  DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealthFinally, I used the EMP control "Apply patch", which uses the same poweshell method to install the patch that failed for me several times.Subsequently, and eventually, it was fixed.
