Sorry for the bad english. (thanks google)
I'm trying software RAID-5 with Windows 10. I tried it under VMware Workstation v17.5 with Home Single Language Tr, Pro, LTSB-LTSC. However, I was not successful.
There is a 100 GB virtual disk configuration for the system, 4x50 GB and 4x75 GB virtual disk configuration for RAID-5.
I watched many related videos. In all of them, they can convert the disks to dynamic disks with diskmgmt.msc and select RAID-5 by right-clicking.
I cannot select (basic or dynamic) by right clicking. RAID-5 is not selectable.
When configured with storage areas, it does not see dynamic disks. However, in the videos, all of them are made with dynamic disk.
While in the basic disk state, I can perform parity (RAID-5) with storage areas. However, the capacity is low.
When I configure 50+50+75 in the case of the basic disk, diskmgmt does not show the remaining part of 75. However, it appeared in the videos.
My real machine:
MSI B650 Gaming Plus Wifi AM5 motherboard, AMD Ryzen 8700F, 64 GB ram, RTX-4060.
On the motherboard:
1 TB NVME (windows)
2 TB WD Purple
3 TB SG Surveillance
4 TB SB Surveillance
6 TB WD Purple
On Asmedia 106 SATA expansion card: (not support RAID-5)
512 GB Sandisk SSD (linux)
8 TB WD Purple
12 TB WD Purple
1....empty slot
USB external disk:
3+4 TB SG Expansion, 2+6 TB WD Elements. External disks are a backup of internal ones. However, plugging and unplugging, cables, adapters, etc. are getting boring. (I guess I'm getting old)
I want to set up RAID5 with an Asmedia 106 SATA card 8+12+12 TB (to be purchased new one 12 TB), and then switch to a 12+12+12+12 TB installation (then I will change and enlarge the disk as needed).
My goal is not to bother with a USB external disk. Creating a fault-tolerant backup unit that I can use instead of an external disk with RAID.
Performance definitely doesn't matter. It will only be used for file backup.
Maximum 1-2 files can be accessed at the same time. 99% of the time usage will be like this.
That's why I see the external NAS unit as unnecessary. That's why I think software raid will be sufficient.
If not, the Terramaster F4-210 2 GB model seems suitable.
There is online expansion, repair, disk encryption, etc. It doesn't have many features and the performance is not very good, but it is enough for me.
Also with windows:
If I make RAID-5 with 8+12+12 TB, will I be able to expand it without loss if I wait 12 GB?
If I enlarge the disk with 16 TB etc. in the future, can I change it without any problems?
I'm trying to try these with VMware, but I failed right from the start.
Thanks in advance for any help.
