Hi,

i have server with windows server 2022 and use for RDS server, i've already have RDS license for 1 device. i plan to buy 4 more license because there are 5 device. but something weird all device that ever connected issued the available RDS license before i buy it (not using the temporary license). how could this happening?

i have another question: if i just buy the license form microsoft but never apply to OS installed. can be that considered i already have legal license?

in this case i don't know what happen with my RDS server and the license. but if just buy amount of license same as amount as device considered legal, so i just let the server just the way it is. cause i'm afraid if i do more about setting it will crash the server.

thx u in advance

regards

johnny

    Hello,

In a Windows Server 2022 RDS environment, when a device first connects to an RDS Session Host, it is issued a temporary license. If the license server is activated and there are available RDS CALs (Client Access Licenses), the temporary license will be upgraded to a permanent license the next time the device connects. This is likely why you observed that all devices received permanent licenses.

Additionally, the RDS license server automatically manages license allocation and upgrades. As long as there are sufficient licenses, devices will be granted permanent licenses upon connection.

RDS licenses purchased from Microsoft are legitimate, but simply purchasing the licenses without installing them on the license server is insufficient. The licenses must be installed on the license server via the "Remote Desktop Licensing Manager" and associated with the RDS Session Host for the system to recognize and use them.

If the licenses are not installed, the system will enter a grace period (120 days), during which it can still function normally. However, after the grace period ends, the system will not be able to continue providing RDS services without legitimate licenses.

It is recommended that you install the newly purchased licenses on the license server as soon as possible after purchasing licenses. The steps are as follows:

1.Open the "Remote Desktop Licensing Manager."

2.Right-click the license server and select "Install Licenses."

3.Enter the license information (such as the license code or agreement number) and select the license type and quantity.

4.Complete the installation. The license server will automatically allocate the licenses to the connected devices.

Installing licenses will not cause the server to crash. As long as you follow the official documentation, the system will automatically manage license allocation. If you are concerned about making mistakes, you can back up relevant configuration files in advance.

After installation, it is recommended to regularly check the license status using the "Remote Desktop Licensing Manager" or the "Remote Desktop Licensing Diagnostics Tool" to ensure that all devices have obtained legitimate licenses.

    I hope this information helps.

    Best regards,

i've checked on tenant.id portal, there's no purchased RDS license. still just one purchased which is for just 1 device. so how come the 4 (even more) new device can get permanent license?

Windows Server 2022 - Installed RDS Per Device CAL has used by 7 device before i buy new license. are there something wrong with the Windows Server 2022 that i installed?

    thx u

    regards
