Hi Guys,

I am having strange problem. I am finding a lot of duplicate folder names in windows file explorer. As you can see in search, they are directly under same path. After going into one of the folder and right click on on of the file and it showed that folder name is different from what in was showing. After doing some research, I have found that it was caused by desktop.ini file. But I couldn't not understand how it can happen or how to fix it. Can someone please guide me to right direction. it is such a shocking how Windows allow that to happen. So those folder can be found by windows explorer search, but powershell or command line can not find them because actual foldernames are different.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Customer Support.

This may be caused by an error in the desktop .ini file. You can try deleting the desktop .ini files in these folders and restarting Explorer. This should resolve the issue you are experiencing.

You can try the following steps to remove these duplicate folders:

    1. In File Explorer, right-click the duplicate folder and select Properties.
    2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Customize tab.
    3. In the Customize tab, click the Clear Custom Properties button.
    4. Confirm that you want to clear the custom properties and click the OK button. This should delete the desktop .ini file and restore the folder's normal name.

If you are still experiencing problems, you may want to contact Windows technical support or seek other professional help.

    Best Regards,

    Shujun

    Hello,

Thanks for your reply, sorry to hear about this issue.

Sorry, I answered it wrong before. There is no "Clear Custom Properties" button in the "Customize" tab.

If you want to clear custom properties in a folder, you might try the following steps:

    1. Open the folder and click the "View" tab.
    2. Click the "Options" button.
    3. In the Folder Options window, click the View tab.
    4. Under "Advanced settings", find "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" and select it.
    5. Click the "Apply" button and then click the "OK" button.
    6. Return to the folder and locate the desktop.ini file.
    7. Right-click on the desktop.ini file and select Delete option.

This way you can delete the desktop.ini file and clear the custom properties in the folder.

Note that deleting the desktop.ini file does not affect the folder, it simply returns the folder to its default settings.

    Hope this can help you.

    Best Regards,

    Shujun
