Bitlocker Activation

Hello, we have a situation where an update has activated Bitlocker for many of the computers in our organization. Most of the time (about 75% of the time) we are able to log in and find the Bitlocker key for the person, but there are a few instances where that has not been the case. Here is what we have going:

  • We are not setting up Bitlocker in any way.
  • The end user is not setting up Bitlocker.
  • After the update is applied and the computer is rebooted, it reboots into the screen requesting the Bitlocker key.

Does anyone know how we can avoid this in the future?

Is Bitlocker somehow enabled by default?

Is there any way to get back into these computers without the recovery key?

We use HP computers, but it is happening to different makes and models.

This has happened to us in the past, but never as widespread as this. Thank you for your help.

Hello Tdgreer1203_829,

thank you for posting on the Microsoft Community Forums.

BitLocker can indeed be configured to activate on its own under certain circumstances, especially if there are changes detected in the system that it interprets as potential security threats (e.g., firmware updates, significant OS updates, hardware changes, etc.). Unfortunately, there is no way to bypass BitLocker without the recovery key unless a full system reset, which would result in data loss.

To retrieve your BitLocker recovery key, please follow the steps in Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support.

Important:

  • If you are unable to locate the BitLocker recovery key and can't revert any configuration change that might have caused it to be required, you’ll need to reset your device using one of the Windows recovery options. Resetting your device will remove all of your files.
  • Microsoft support is unable to provide, or recreate, a lost BitLocker recovery key.

Kind regards,

Lei
