A Tale of 2 Printers & Group Policy

Needed to install 2 network printers on an end user's system. Logged in as the domain admin on the user's PC. Installed the 1st printer (Epson WF-7520). Worked without issue. Tried to install the 2nd printer (Lexmark MX410). Installation failed each time. Looking in Printers and Scanners, the printer name was there, but next to the name it said "setup blocked by group policy".

In the group policy editor, under Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options Devices: Prevent users from installing printer drivers was already Disabled.

What am I missing? What would allow one printer to install and not the other?

End User PC is running Win 10 64-bit. Server is 2003. Have installed the Lexmark on other Win 10 PCs on the network without issue.

    Hello,

According to your description, the issue of "Settings Blocked by Group Policy" occurs when installing a second printer, Lexmark MX410, despite confirming that the relevant Group Policy is set to "Disabled". You can try the following workarounds:

    1. Although Prevent users from installing printer drivers is disabled, there may be other Group Policy settings that are affecting the installation of the printer. You can open the Command Prompt (cmd) with administrator privileges on the client and enter the following command to collect Group Policy reports and check if other printer-related policies are configured: gpresult /h c:/1.html
    2. Make sure the Lexmark MX410 drivers installed are compatible with Windows 10. If the driver version is too old, it may cause the installation to fail. It is recommended to download the latest drivers from the official Lexmark website.
    3. Try installing the printer driver manually instead of through the automatic installer:

①Open Control Panel > Devices & Printers.

② Click "Add Printer" and select "The printer I need is not in the list".

③ Select "Use TCP/IP Port", enter the IP address of the printer, and manually select the printer model.

    1. Since the print server is Windows Server 2003, it is no longer within the scope of Microsoft technical support, and there may be compatibility problems. Make sure that the print service on the server is properly configured and that the Lexmark MX410 printer is supported.
    2. Make sure the client's Windows 10 system is up to date, as some updates may fix issues related to hardware compatibility.
    3. Even though you're logged in as a domain administrator, there may still be insufficient permissions. Make sure that the domain administrator account has permission to install the printer. Check your printer's sharing settings to make sure it's accessible to other devices on your network.

    I hope this information helps.

    Best regards,

    Jingjing Wu
