Windows 11 problem, mapping network drive

I've been through many related posts on this one, and tried many fixes. I am trying to map a usb drive, connected to my Virgin Valerie modem. I have previously mapped this drive on computers running both Windows 11 and Windows 10 in the usual way without any issues. Both are still up and running, connected to my modem and have no trouble reading and writing to the usb drive.

I have a new computer, installed Windows 11, home edition, currently updated Windows 11 Version 24H2.

When I go to map this same drive in the exact same way, I get a pop-up from Windows security...

(this website told me both that the image file failed to upload, and that it was inserted successfully, but I don't see it. So I will reproduce all of the text in the popup}

Windows Security

Enter network credentials

Enter your credentials to connect to: 192.168.2.1

<username>

<password>

x Remember my credentials

The username or password is incorrect

I have entered every possible combination of usernames and passwords. Windows signins, windows account name, phone number, password, wifi name, router password, wifi password....

Nothing works, and, of course, NO help from Windows as to what they're looking for.

I've changed other settings, e.g. private and public network, gone into the registry and inserted a key - AllowInsecureGuestAuth - which didn't help and I've deleted....been at this for some hours without success.

Windows Security itself seems to have no ability to be temporarily disabled, just to verify that it is in fact the problem, mostly the console provides a bunch of links to internet pages....how special.

And I have to say I'm not thrilled with MSoft not providing any direct way to ask question to someone about a problem with a product I've just purchased, just this board where you toss a question out into the ether and hope for a connection.

But I guess that's what customer (lack of) support has come to.

Hopefully some kind soul has an answer for this issue.

    Hello,

    I suggest you try to map a network drive to see if the problem can be solved. Please refer to the following link:

    Map a network drive in Windows - Microsoft Support

    If the problem is still not solved, I suggest you try to open the network credentials to see if there are relevant account credentials. If so, delete them and then remap the share.

    Best Regards

    Thanks, but this didn't work.

    I have compared the credential settings on the problem Window11 installation with those on another Windows11 PC I have.

    Both have the same network information and settings. The network (router IP) is set as public on both. Shouldn't require a password to map a USB drive connected to that, my, router.

    Both sets of Windows credentials for the router IP address are identical, I deleted and reentered those on the problem installation.

    But I get the same result. When I try to map the drive (I have this mapped on two other platforms Windows 10 and 11, and never saw this username/password request on either when I mapped them) I get the The username or password is incorrect message again.

    This should not be happening. Something is wrong if Windows security doesn't even recognize that the network it is accessing is simply a drive on the router that it, obviously, already has access to.

    This is a brand new computer, with no bloatware. Only a new clean installation of W11 OME and a few programs I've added to play media files. There should be a straightforward way to fix this. If some buried setting is not set correctly, I didn't set it that way. Very frustrating.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply. I suggest you try the following steps to see if the problem can be solved:

    Open the Run window by pressing win+r, then type gpedit.msc to open the Group Policy Manager, find Computer Configuration-Windows Settings-Security Settings-Local Policies-Security Options, and configure the following policies:

    Network Security: Lan Manager Authentication Level", select "Send LM and NTML responses

    Network Access: Sharing and Security Model for Local Accounts", select "Classic = Authenticate local users without changing their original identities

    Best Regards

    Thanks, but this was also a bust.

    Had to install gpedit, not onboard with Windows 11 Home.

    I'm up to level 3 MS support and many, many hours invested in trying to solve this

    Pretty close to giving up on accessing this drive. I could carry a portable drive around with those file for the next few decades and not spend as much time as I have done already trying to get this OS to do what it is supposed to do out of the box.

    My version of Windows 11 Home only provides the following options under "Network access: Sharing security model for local accounts"

    Classic - local users authenticate as themselves

    Guest only - local users authenticate as Guest

    Please advise. Thank you.
