Error code 0x80004005 when trying to access network share

I have this version of Windows on a laptop:

Edition Windows 11 Home

Version 24H2

Installed on ‎2024-‎09-‎01

OS build 26100.1742

Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.18.0

This laptop has 2 accounts on it, one local and one Microsoft account.

When I am logged into the local account, I can access the network share \server.example.com\someshare without any problem.

When I am logged into the Microsoft account, I cannot access the exact same share. I get the error:

Windows cannot access \server.example.com\someshare

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with

your network. To try to identify and resolve the network problems, click

Diagnose.

Error code: 0x80004005

Unspecified error

"Diagnose" does nothing.

I am at a loss for what else to try since there are no problems when using the local account.

Any ideas?

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

Based on the problem you described, you can't access the network share when using a Microsoft account, but there is no problem when using a local account. This situation may be related to account permissions, network settings, or credential management. Here are some possible solutions:

    1. Make sure that the credentials for the network share are correct when using your Microsoft account. You can try adding or updating credentials in the Credential Manager.
    2. Make sure that the network settings under your Microsoft account are the same as your local account. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced Network Settings and make sure Network Discovery and File & Printer Sharing are turned on.
    3. Make sure your Microsoft account has access on the network share. You may need to check the permission settings for the shared folder on the server to make sure that the account is allowed access.
    4. Try to access the share using the server's IP address instead of the hostname.
    5. Sometimes, IPv6 can cause network problems. You can try disabling IPv6:
    6. Ensure that Windows Firewall or any third-party firewall is not blocking network access to your Microsoft account. You can temporarily disable the firewall for testing.
    7. If none of the above works, you can try resetting the network settings:

Open "Settings", select "Network & Internet", and under "Status", find the "Network Reset" option. After the reset, restart your computer.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Regards,

    Jill Zhou
