Cannot install Canon Pixma mg7720 driver on windows 11 laptop

Hello,

I recently purchased a Lenovo laptop with Windows 11 ARM based processor. I have a pixma mg7720 printer that is on my home network. My new laptop recognizes the mg7720 and I can even add it through the "Printers and Scanners" section of my settings on the laptop, but I cannot install the driver from Canon's website (the Print Driver and Scan Utility Installer Ver.1.00 file). I have access to very rudimentary print functions when the printer is added via the "Add Device" option in the "Printers and Scanners" section, but I obviously want the full printer/scanner/copier functionality that the canon driver would provide. I've tried downloading the driver separately and through the installation package and I've had no luck so far. Again, I've had no problems with this new windows 11 laptop communicating with the printer, I just cannot install the driver. Can anyone possibly shed light on this?

    Hello,

When you cannot install the printer driver, is there any related error message? If so, please take a screenshot and reply here, because it will help us to troubleshoot the problem. In addition, you can refer to the method in the following link to see if you can successfully install the printer driver.

See below. When I download the driver exe file (m68n-win-mg7700-1_00-ea34_2 which is the correct one per canon's website) I have no problem downloading & extracting the file, but when it attempts to install this immediately & always comes up:

I've tried another method as well, by downloading the installer package (win-mg7700-1_0-jucd) in an attempt to install the correct driver. It will connect with the printer and once again download the driver but will give me the message that it cannot install it.

I have confirmed that my printer is compatible with arm based processors, per this fact sheet (mine is the PIXMA mg7720):

    https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/FAQ100604

And again, my laptop can recognize the printer and does apply a universal driver to install it, but using this driver, the printer's capabilities are hampered significantly. Print functions are extremely basic with the windows driver. Same with the scanning features.

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I suggest you try to modify the group policy to see if the problem can be fixed. The steps are as follows: Use the Win+R key combination to open the Run window and type gpedit.msc to confirm and open the Local Group Policy Editor. Go to the location shown in the figure below and change the policy of preventing users from installing printer drivers to disabled.

    Best Regards

You probably have Windows 11 Home instead of Pro. Try to run secpol.msc instead and you will find the same setting under Local Policies > Security Options.

I'm not sure if that will help you though. I'm having the same issue with my Canon PIXMA MG2920 and have the same exact error and behavior as you. I think the driver just isn't compatible even though Canon is saying that it should be. Or else there is something wrong with the Emulation because it does look like Windows is running the driver under x64 emulation mode.
