So long story short: the unlimited licences are only in Hyper-V isolation and You can't benefit from them using other hypervisors.
About Windows Server Datacenter licencing
Hello everyone,
I would like to dispel some doubts regarding the licensing of Windows Server in the Datacenter edition. This edition states that it has an unlimited number of licenses for virtual machines. I would like to clarify when these unlimited licenses are available. Let's assume two scenarios:
- I have a server with 16 cores on which I installed a hypervisor from VMware, I bought a Windows Server Datacenter license for 16 cores and CAL. I create virtual machines and install the purchased Datacenter on them.
- The same as above, but instead of the hypervisor from VMware, I use Hyper-V using the purchased license.
Do I have access to unlimited licenses in both cases or only in the second case? Or maybe you have to meet other conditions to have unlimited licenses?
