Networking two Windows computers

Years ago sharing a drive or even a folder was easy. Microsoft has made the process of creating a closed network incredibly difficult. Since Windows 10, I’ve never successfully created a network that allows me to share or exchange files between two computers I have at home.

The same is true with creating a virtual machine/drive to test an application securely.

    Hi Lester,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having difficulty setting up a network between your Windows computers.

Here are some steps you can try to create a network between two Windows computers and enable file sharing:

File sharing over a network in Windows - Microsoft Support

Share things with nearby devices in Windows - Microsoft Support

Would you tell me if you have set up file sharing according to the steps provided earlier? If you encounter an error after setting up successfully, can you tell me what problem you encountered? I'll try my best to help you solve it.

    Your Sincerely

Hahn - MSFT | Microsoft Community Support Specialist

Thank you for your reply, but Microsoft's instructions do not work. When I search for my user name that is on this computer, it is not found. If I could send a screen shot, I would show you that my user is the correct name that cannot be found. At this point I as will many other just quit. I know I can use everyone, but I want to give specific permissions to each user as I do not want to give FULL CONTROL to EVERYONE.

In the first instance I shared my C drive with my username. That finally worked. At first I was unable to find any users. In the second instance, I tried to share a Music folder on an attached Passport drive. I got an error message that THE FOLDER CANNOT BE SHARED. No reason was given. When I click the link below that says " I'm having trouble sharing", I get to the same page you sent to me. I have no trouble browsing the attached drivee(s).

Just as an additional note, When I browse using Explorer, I do not get the screen that the tutorial shows. My Menu bar does not have anything that says "SHARE".

I am able to share the entire drive, but I cannot share any folder on the drive. Also when trying to share a folder, I do not get the options that include FULL CONTROL. I only get Read, Read/Write and Remove. Why is this not consistent with all other sharing operations?
