Setup prompt timeout is changed to 2 after execute sysprep command

Dear expert,

I found the value of "Setup Prompt Timeout" in AMI BIOS setup menu changes from 1(default) to 2 after executing Windows sysprep without any operation.

My steps are as follows
1)Boot up UEFI Windows 10 22H2
2)Execute sysprep command under OS
sysprep /oobe /generalize /shutdown
3) Power on system
Check Setup Prompt Timeout value:1(No change)
4) First reboot after Getting ready
Check Setup Prompt Timeout value:2(change)

This issue is happened on UEFI Win 10 but Legacy Win 10 is no problem.

May I know whether the value of "Setup Prompt Timeout" in AMI BIOS setup menu is changed by UEFI Windows 10 in the Sysprep process?

May I know why windows 10 changes it?

Best Regards,

    Hello

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

The behavior you're describing, where the "Setup Prompt Timeout" value in AMI BIOS setup changes after running Sysprep on a UEFI Windows 10 installation, is peculiar and might not be widely documented. Here are a few potential avenues to consider:

1.UEFI and Sysprep Interactions: Sysprep is designed to generalize a Windows installation, which involves removing system-specific data and resetting some elements of the OS. This process can interact with UEFI settings in ways that don't occur with legacy BIOS settings, as UEFI has more direct interactions with the operating system.

2.Firmware/BIOS Updates and Settings: It's possible that UEFI firmware updates or the interaction between UEFI and Windows 10 might cause settings adjustments. The UEFI firmware could be reacting to changes in the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) or other system configurations during the first boot after running Sysprep.

3.OEM Customizations: Some Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) may include scripts or settings that influence BIOS or UEFI settings during the deployment of the operating system. These customizations might be triggered during the Sysprep process.

    Troubleshooting Steps:

1.BIOS/UEFI Update: Check if there's a UEFI firmware update available from your motherboard or system manufacturer that might address this issue.

2.UEFI Settings Backup: If your UEFI firmware allows, back up your current settings before running Sysprep. After Sysprep, compare the settings to identify any other changes that might be happening.

3.Check Scripts and Customizations: Review any deployment scripts or customizations that might be included in your Windows image or during the Sysprep process.

4.Log Files: Check Windows event logs and setup logs for any entries that might indicate changes to UEFI settings during the Sysprep process.

If this issue is of significant concern or affects multiple systems in a deployment scenario, reaching out to your motherboard/system manufacturer's technical support might provide more specific insights or solutions tailored to your hardware and software environment.

    Best Regards,

    Wesley Li

    Dear Li,

Thank for your reply. Your comment is useful.

My test OS, UEFI Windows 10 22H2 is pure OS from Microsoft without any setting and installing driver.

I also queried BIOS vendor about this issue. AMI's reply is 'Please raise your concern to MSFT. This is related to OS behavior.'

Is it possible to confirm whether pure UEFI Windows 10 changes the 'Setup Prompt Timeout' after running Sysprep?

May I know how to avoid 'Setup Prompt Timeout' be changed by UEFI Widnows 10?

    Best Regards,

Based on the information available, it is possible that the sysprep process in UEFI Windows 10 might be modifying the BIOS settings, including the "Setup Prompt Timeout" value. The sysprep process is designed to prepare an installation of Windows for duplication, auditing, and customer delivery. It generalizes the Windows installation by removing specific information, which might include certain BIOS settings.

However, the exact reason why Windows 10 changes the "Setup Prompt Timeout" value during the sysprep process is not explicitly documented. It could be related to how UEFI firmware interacts with the Windows operating system during the sysprep process, causing certain BIOS settings to be altered.

    Dear Li,

    Thank for your reply.

I need to find out some solutions for this case.

Could you share a method to disable UEFI Widnows 10 changes 'Setup Prompt Timeout'?

    Best Regards
