Access Denied Error on File Share after C Drive Expansion on Windows Server 2016

Body:

I’m experiencing an issue with file sharing on Windows Server 2016 after expanding the C drive. Here’s a summary of what I did:

  1. Backup: Used Veeam Backup to back up all folders from the E drive (containing the file share) to another server.
  2. Partition Changes: Deleted the E partition and expanded the C drive.
  3. Restoration: Copied back the shared folders using Veeam's file copy feature after formatting the E drive again .
  4. Permissions: Reconstructed the share and NTFS permissions:
    • Set the owner to the security group sf-administrators which has administrator as member.
    • Disabled inheritance and added security groups with Read, Write, and Execute permissions.

Despite these steps, employees are encountering an "Access Denied" error when trying to save changes to existing files.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  • Ran icacls * /t /q /c /reset to reset permissions on all folders.
  • Verified share and NTFS permissions multiple times.

Questions:

  • What else can I check or adjust to resolve this access issue?
  • Is there something specific I might have missed regarding permissions or sharing settings?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello,

Based on the information you provided, I suggest you add modification permissions to the corresponding group in the shared folder where the modified content cannot be successfully saved to see if it works.

    Best Regards

    Dear @Zunhui Han

I tried to give full permission, and the problem is still there:

I shared the base folder using the advanced sharing giving full permission to everyone

and in the subfolders inside the main folder, I disabled inheritance and added every group with the at least write permission. and the problem is understandable. Why this message still appears??
