Windows 11 log on screen not giving me the option to log on as a different user

Hi,

I have some configuration work I want to do on a PC that I am pretty sure is running Windows 11. It is currently on the logon screen asking the "default" user (the person who uses this PC every day and who was the last person to log on) to enter his or her PIN. This person is not available today.

This is a domain controlled PC, and I have my own user account that allows me to log onto any PC on the domain. In most cases (Windows 10 and 11), I've found that while the log on screen usually does assume the most recent person to log on will be logging on again, there is usually a button or a link that allows me to log on as another user.

This particular PC is not giving me this option. Without knowing the default user's PIN, it seems that my only options are to Shut Down or Restart. I am wondering if there is a way (keyboard shortcut or other) that I might be able to log on to this PC as a different user.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

    Hello kraemerpw,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

You can use the "Sign-in options" button on the login screen to sign in with a different account. To access this option, click on the "Sign-in options" button located below the password field on the login screen. From there, you can choose to sign in with a different Microsoft account or a local account. If you don't see the "Sign-in options" button, make sure that your device is up to date with the latest Windows 11 updates.

If it does not work above, you can try to set and check if there will be Other user" option on the login screen.

Note: 1.Please set the setting below on one test machine and check if it helps, then you can set it on machine in production environment.2.Please back up the registry data before you modify it.

If you are unable to see the "Other user" option on the login screen of Windows 11, it may be due to a group policy setting or a registry key that has been modified.

To resolve this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    2. Type "gpedit.msc" and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
    3. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon.
    4. Double-click on "Hide entry points for Fast User Switching" and select "Disabled".
    5. Click on "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.

If the above steps do not work, you can try modifying the registry key:

    1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    2. Type "regedit" and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
    3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System.
    4. Double-click on "HideFastUserSwitching" and change the value from "1" to "0".
    5. Click on "OK" to save the changes.

After making these changes, restart your computer and check if the "Other user" option is now visible on the login screen.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Daisy Zhou
