Bit Locker / Key ID

I possess a key ID for Bitlocker, but I lack the recovery key. What are my options? I've consulted my IT department, and after checking, they confirmed they don't have it either. My desktop remains inaccessible; I'm unable to proceed without entering the recovery key. There are many important files on my PC that I need, and unfortunately, I haven't performed a backup either.

    Hello Aquinas Geo,

thank you for posting on the Microsoft Community Forums.

Unfortunately, without the recovery key, accessing the encrypted files might not be possible.

To recover the recovery key, please follow the steps in Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support.

BitLocker encryption is designed to be very secure, so recovering data without the key is extremely difficult by design. In the future, making backups of critical data and storing recovery keys in multiple secure locations can help prevent situations like this.

    Important:

    • If you are unable to locate the BitLocker recovery key and can't revert any configuration change that might have caused it to be required, you’ll need to reset your device using one of the Windows recovery options. Resetting your device will remove all of your files.
    • Microsoft support is unable to provide, or recreate, a lost BitLocker recovery key.

    Best regards,

    Lei
