Network set-up

If this the wrong topic, please advise.

Here's the background.

I bought a new HP AIO to replace my ancient HP desktop - so old that when I entered the SN and prod # it wasn't recognized.

What I'm trying to do is connect my new AIO to the old desktop to transfer selected files. Every thing I've tried so far, like copy/paste to USB, burn to CD/DVD, etc. doesn't work. My old desktop has a non-working CD/DVD burner and 8 USB  slots that do not recognize my portable HDDs. Therefore, I'm unable to burn files to DVD or copy/paste to my portable HDD.

On both my AIO and old desktop, both computers are listed under "Network". When I try to access my AIO from the old desktop I get this:

boong1_0-1715606790700.png

I have no idea what the credentials are. I've used the User Name a pw when I originally set-up the AIO and the change  required necessary for another action. I couldn't use the router info because there is no User Name with it, only a password.

I've went to the MS site that has instructions for setting up a network but it doesn't work. Don't really see a need for that as both computers are listed on the Network link.

When I try to access the old desktop from my AIO, I get the alert saying Network - unable to access - you don't have permission to access, contact your network administrator. I'm the administrator on both computers.

Does anybody know what I need to do to access my desktop from my AIO?

For what it's worth, I'm not a fan of W11 JEA ***moved from Windows / Windows 11 / Settings***

Hello,

Thank you for your reply, based on your current situation I suggest you try the following steps:

Steps to Set Up File Sharing on a Windows PC

Note: These steps needs to be done on each Windows PC you want to be able to share files and folders between.

  1. Make sure each computer you want to share between are all connected to the same network. For example, all connected to the same router via Ethernet and/or wireless.
  2. Make sure each computer on the network has a different computer name.
  3. Make sure each computer you want to share between are on the same workgroup. (see screenshot below) Image
  4. Enable SMB Direct on each computer you want to share between. If you are connecting to a previous version of Windows (ex: Windows 7/8/8.1) than Windows 10, then you will need to enable SMB1. (see screenshot below) SMB Direct will not be available in the Windows 10 Home edition. You will need to enable SMB1 instead.
If you enable SMB1, be sure to uncheck Automatic Removal. Image
  5. Make sure Use Sharing Wizard is checked in Folder Options > View tab on each computer you want to share between. (see screenshot below) Image
  6. Make sure the below mentioned services are started (running) and their startup type is set to automatic on each computer you want to share between. (see screenshots below)
    • DNS Client
    • Function Discovery Provider Host
    • Function Discovery Resource Publication
    • Server
    • SSDP Discovery
    • UPnP Device Host
    Image
  7. Set the network location on each computer you want to share between to private (recommended) or public. (Go to Settings > Network and Internet > Network Properties) Image
  8. Customize Network Sharing Settings:- (Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings)
    1. Turn on network discovery for your private or public network on each computer you want to share between.
    2. Turn on File and Printer Sharing for your private or public network on each computer you want to share between.
    3. Turn on Public folder sharing on each computer you want to share between if you want to share items in the C:\Users\Public folder on a computer.
    4. Turn off password protected sharing on each computer you want to share between.
    5. Select the file sharing connections encryption level you want to use on each computer you want to share between.

hank you Zunhui Han for your response. I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. Here’s the latest.

Just to make things confusing, when I click on This PC and Network on both my AIO and desktop, both are listed on each one.

I  followed your suggestion to check on the network and firewall. Everything is toggled on and I also enabled file sharing. Firewall not the problem.

My problem is when I try to access the files on the AIO from the desktop I get the following:

I tried using my email/pw when I first set-up my AIO but it didn't work.
So, I tried a different email/pw and email/pin number that was used when a change was needed by MS for something else. I’m at a total loss as to what ID and password is needed to access the files.

When I try to access the desktop from my AIO, here’s what I get

And when I click on “C”

I’m at a total loss as to what I have to do to access the files on the desktop from my AIO. Right now, I have an ethernet crossover and coming tomorrow an ethernet splitter. Will try that and see if that will get it done.

If not, I’ll just forget the files on my desktop and use the original discs to reset it to factory settings before I send it to recycle.

Thanks for your time and help.

    Hello,

You can try the following in an AIO that cannot be accessed:

    "Win+R">>Type: regedit

Expand the "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters]" items in turn.

Right-click the mouse in the blank space on the right and select the "New"-"DWORD Value (32-bit)" item from the right-click menu.

Then rename the newly created DWORD key to "AllowInsecureGuestAuth",

At the same time, change its value to "1" and click "OK" to complete the setting operation.

Note: 64-bit systems also need to add a 32-bit dword value.

Next, right-click the "Network" icon on the taskbar and select the "Open Network and Internet Settings" item from its right-click menu to enter.

    Click "Network and Sharing Center",

After opening, click the "Change advanced sharing settings" button in the upper left corner to expand the "Guest or Public" section.

Check the "Enable network discovery" and "Enable file and print sharing" items, and click the "Save Settings" button.

    Then start the "Server" service:

"Windows+R">>Type: services.msc to enter the "Services" interface.

Find the "Server" service, right-click and select the "Properties" item.

Set the "Startup type" to "Automatic" and click the "Start" button to start this service. Click "OK" to complete the setting.

Hope the above information can help you.

    Best regards

    Zunhui
