I have remote desktop on both a laptop and a mini PC. Both have windows 11 pro. I am able to connect while on the same network. I'd like to understand how to connect remotely while on different networks via the VPN method.

    Hello,

You will need to configure the VPN on both computers:

    1. VPN Server Configuration:

You'll need to set up a VPN server on the mini PC if it's going to be accessible remotely. This involves installing and setting up the VPN software to accept incoming connections.

    1. VPN Client Configuration:

On the laptop that you want to use for remote access, you'll need to configure a VPN client to connect to the server that was set up earlier. This typically involves adding a new VPN connection in your network settings, providing details like the server address, type of authentication, and login credentials.

Once the laptop is connected to the VPN, it should appear as if it's part of the same local network as the mini PC. Then, you can initiate an RDP session from the laptop to the mini PC using its IP address within the VPN network.

There are a number of VPN services, for a personal setup, you can use a third-party commercial VPN service.

    Regards,

    Karlie

    Hey!

To connect via VPN while on different networks, you first need to set up a VPN on the network where the mini PC is located. Most routers have a VPN server option, or you can use software like OpenVPN.

Once the VPN is set up, connect your laptop to that VPN, which will put it on the same network as the mini PC. Then, use Remote Desktop Connection with the mini PC’s local IP address just like you do when you're on the same network.

If you don't want to mess with VPN settings (which can be a bit tricky and require proper configuration on your router or PC), an easier workaround is to use remote desktop software like HelpWire, TeamViewer, or AnyDesk. These programs automatically route traffic and connect computers across different networks without needing a VPN setup. Just install the software on both devices, log in, and you’re good to go!
