RDS 2022 Printer redirections take forever

I've setup a new RDS 2022 server for two users. There is no gateway server setup. Only the domain controller and this one session host.

When I remote desktop into the server and open Devices and Printers I can see how the redirected printers are added/setup. It takes on average about 5min to setup 7 redirected printers. This means the user has to sit and wait 5min before she can open her application. On their previous RDS 2012 it took less than a minute.

I removed all the "inactive TS ports" in the registry and restarted the server. Same problem.

I made sure all drivers are installed and I checked that all redirected printers use the installed drivers when they eventually show.

I removed all unused printers from the user's desktop computer.

I disabled all redirection except for printers on the collection settings.

I connected from a computer with only two printers installed, it took more than two minutes to redirect both printers.

I have no anti-virus installed yet.

Has anyone seen this and found a fix?

    Hello dvz_270,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft customer support. I understand that you are experiencing slow printer redirection on your RDS 2022 server.

One possible solution is to disable the Easy Print driver. This driver is used by default for printer redirection and can cause slow performance. To disable it, you can follow these steps:

    1. Open the Group Policy Editor by typing "gpedit.msc" in the Run dialog box.
    2. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Printer Redirection.
    3. Double-click "Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first" and select "Disabled".
    4. Click "Apply" and "OK" to save the changes.

Another possible solution is to install the latest printer drivers on the RDS server. You can download the latest drivers from the printer manufacturer's website and install them on the server.

I hope this helps resolve your issue. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Best regards

Thank you Bblythe. I have tried with the Easy Print driver disabled, but I disabled it through the session collection settings. I assume that is the same?

The printer drivers are all the latest. I downloaded all of them when this server was setup recently.

    Hello dvz_270,

Disabling the Easy Print driver through the session collection settings should have the same effect as disabling it through the Group Policy Editor. So, if you have already disabled it through the session collection settings and are still experiencing slow printer redirection, then it may not be the cause of the issue.

In that case, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

    1. Check the network connectivity between the RDS server and the client computers. Slow network connectivity can cause slow printer redirection.
    2. Check if there are any printer drivers installed on the RDS server that are not being used. You can remove them to improve performance.
    3. Check the event logs on the RDS server for any errors related to printer redirection. This can help identify the root cause of the issue.
    4. If the issue persists, you can try disabling printer redirection altogether and use a third-party printing solution instead.

I hope these suggestions help. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Best regards

For anyone else having a problem with this. I found a "fix" from 2015. 9 years and 3 OS versions later, this is still not fixed. It confirms my suspicions that Microsoft only deals with money, not people or service.

I have wasted so many hours on this. We even implemented firewalls to setup a site-to-site VPN for shared printers. Connecting the shared printers on the server gave the same problem as redirected printers. Each time a user connects to the server it took a minute or two to connect/setup the network printers and of course the default printer was set to the only available local printer. Each time a user disconnect and reconnected, the server added a second, third, etc. printer for each network printer.

The "fix" is on the below link. Post on Friday 4 December 2015 1:52pm. The last post has a fix for a related issue which I also had after applying the fix. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/archive/msdn-technet-forums/ea51c54b-2734-4987-9f4a-a79f755c8153

    Hello dvz_270

Thank you for sharing the link to the fix you found. It's unfortunate that you've had to spend so much time trying to resolve this issue.

And I'm sorry for the bad experience you've had. I will provide feedback to Microsoft regarding your concerns.

I suggest you post on the “Performance” plate to resolve the performance of printer redirection on your RDS server.

    Best regards
