Hi everyone. I am a server hardware technician, which am having a weird case with my end user.

My client have odered from us a DELL server R650xs and had us to install Windows Server 2022 Standard user experience. As they told us, after 2 days, finished migrating data on the server, in the morning they discovered the hard disk partition D, whose name is "new volume" (picture 1), disappeared in my computer.

When searching the error, they found out that it is still in disk managment but the letter and its name had changed to somethings "Servername Date time Disk number" (picture 2), which casue interupt their operation as SQL database.

Firstly, When I heard from them, I could not understand bc this was weird. After examining the server hardware, I got no error log or report from the server, but checking the event viewer, there are some critical message (picture ) "the driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk\DR2(3)".

Can I assume this error to the case from above ? Although, all of hard disks' health are 100% perfect.

Server specification:

Dell server R650xs

CPU: 1 x Xeon 5317

RAM: 64GB RDIMM.

Hard disks: 2x MZ7L3480HCHQ-00A07(raid 1- OS volume); 2x MZILT960HBHQ-00007 (raid 1 data volume).

    Hi,

The \Device\Harddisk2 is the Disk 2 in Disk Management, not Disk 1. Have you ever connected an external hard disk drive to your server?

Please also check the event log to see if there is any clue about renaming the volume around that time in the volume name of D: drive.

    Best Regards,

    Dear Ian Xue.

Thank you for your reply. About the case "changing volume nam", Can I ask where to look up the event log for that action ?

    Thanks and best regards.

    Hi Bui Minh Tuan,

Unfortunately the "changing volume name" event is not recorded by default so there is no such events in the event log.

    Best Regards,

    Ian Xue
