Hi All,

On Monday March 3rd, our Microsoft Entra Connect Sync was upgraded automatically from v2.4.27.0 to v2.4.129.0. Earlier, back in December 2024, I manually upgraded from Azure AD Connect to MS Entra Connect v2.4.27.0.

The Settings > Apps reports Microsoft Entra Connect Sync v 2.4.129 (Actually twice)

The AD Sync service is performing its task, the Admin Centre confirms that, but ever since the automatic upgrade from .27 to .129 was applied, every hour (+ a few minutes) the AD Sync service is stopped, and started some time later again.

The folder %ProgramData%\AADConnect contains log-files for for each run, which was until Monday only once in a while, and now every hour.

I cannot believe that this is expected behavior, but from the log files I cannot find what is wrong.

March 3 the initial upgrade attempt and older upgrades:

  • Synchronization Service_AutoUpgrade-timestamp.log
  • ADSyncBootstrap-timestamp.log
  • AzureADConnect_AutoUpgrade-timestamp.log
  • mv-timestamp-Guid.dsml
  • SyncRulesRestoreScript-timestamp-Guid.ps1
  • SyncRulesScript-timestamp-Guid-Guid.ps1
  • SyncRulesScript-timestamp-Guid-Guid.ps1
  • InstalledADSyncPowerShellHelper-timestamp.log
  • InstalledADSyncPowerShellHelper-timestamp.log

For the past few days the following files for every run

  • ADSyncBootsrap-timestamp.log
  • SyncEngine-AutoUpgrader-timestamp.log
  • InstalledADSyncPowerShellHelper-timestamp.log

Plus for the last run:

  • AADConnectUpgrader_uninstall.log Containing the uninstall of 'Microsoft Entra Connect Upgrader'

March 3 the initial upgrade attempt:

  • Synchronization Service_AutoUpgrade-timestamp.log
  • ADSyncBootstrap-timestamp.log
  • AzureADConnect_AutoUpgrade-timestamp.log
  • mv-timestamp-Guid.dsml
  • SyncRulesRestoreScript-timestamp-Guid.ps1
  • SyncRulesScript-timestamp-Guid-Guid.ps1
  • SyncRulesScript-timestamp-Guid-Guid.ps1
  • InstalledADSyncPowerShellHelper-timestamp.log
  • InstalledADSyncPowerShellHelper-timestamp.log

Installed versions are:

You could try disabling AutoUpgrade, waiting a few minutes then enabling it again.

I think this is what worked for us.

I have the exact same issue. I disabled the upgrades in powershell: Set-ADSyncAutoUpgrade Disabled

I have encountered the same issue starting on 3/10. Do we know if there is a fix, or should we just disable auto-update for the time being?

I would recommend opening a ticket with Entra support.

I opened a ticket but have not started engaging with them yet. I also noticed because one step is to add the service account to local admins group, and we are getting a security ticket created each hour due to this. Annoying. I actually plan to disable auto upgrade anyway but will post back anything I get from support.
