Azure Data Studio Design Slow Loading Then Times Out

When I right click on a specific table to access the 'Design' feature so that I can reconfigure some column ordering, it now shows 'Loading designer' then times out after 15+mins. Previously a week ago, I had no issues doing this. User's image

As I understand, you're facing an issue where Azure Data Studio is unable to load the table designer and times out.

Hi @Mahesh Kurva ,

My software is up to date, the latest version: 1.51.1.

I also tried to remove all cached files, re-download Azure Data Studio as well as reboot, but with no avail. The table designer was slow prior to the 'Azure retiring on Feb 2026' but it was still working with no issues but I noticed that after I received this message, the designer just does not load at all and then times out.

I can query and do other functions with no issues, but only the 'Design' and 'Edit Data' takes forever to load for any table now, even tables that only have a few rows of data (using SQL Server DB connection)

I just wanted to also add that I have no issues with the network connection or connection to the database as I can connect through any other means like SMSS/ VS, etc.

Look at the logs in Azure Data Studio to see if there are any specific error messages that could provide more insight into what's causing the timeout.

Since Azure Data Studio is being retired, consider transitioning to Visual Studio Code with the MSSQL extension. This tool is recommended by Microsoft and offers similar functionalities with ongoing support and updates.

Thank you @Mahesh Kurva , I will check - how will I access the error logs in Azure Data Studio?

Also, I did also try with Visual Studio Code with the MSSQL extension, but can the designer in Visual Studio Code be able to re-configure the field order of a table as well? I don't think I saw you can do that as you can in Azure Data Studio

Regarding Visual Studio Code with the MSSQL extension, you're correct that it doesn't have a built-in table designer like Azure Data Studio for reconfiguring the field order of a table. The MSSQL extension focuses more on querying and managing databases through T-SQL scripts.

@Mahesh Kurva , I found that the newest version of Visual Studio Code works after I connected the server details. However, if Azure Data Studio is retired, how else can I easily re-arrange column layouts within a table?

DBeaver is a popular cross-platform database management tool that supports various databases, including SQL Server. It has a table editor that allows you to modify column order.

You can manually write SQL scripts to create a new table with the desired column order, copy the data from the old table to the new one, and then rename the new table. This method is more manual but gives you full control over the column order.
