Delete permanently storage account

I need to permanently delete some storage accounts. They are still in the recovery list on my tenant, but I need to create them in the tenant of my client.

Could somebody help me in permanently deleting them?

Hi Lukas,
To permanently delete storage accounts that are still in the recovery list, you can reclaim capacity using either the Azure portal or PowerShell.

Using the Azure Portal:

Navigate to the storage accounts pane.

Select Reclaim space at the top of the pane.

Read the message and then select OK.

Wait for a success notification. You can check the bell icon on the portal for updates.

Refresh the Storage accounts page; the deleted accounts should no longer be shown in the list.

Using PowerShell:

Ensure that you have Azure PowerShell installed and configured.

Run the following cmdlets to permanently delete the accounts:
$farm_name = (Get-AzsStorageFarm)[0].name Start-AzsReclaimStorageCapacity -FarmName $farm_name
Note: Running these cmdlets will permanently delete the account and its contents, making them unrecoverable.

Hi Lukas,

To permanently delete storage accounts that are still in the recovery list,

When a storage account is deleted, it is moved to the recovery list where it is retained for a specified period before permanent deletion.

If soft delete is enabled, the data in the storage account will be retained for the duration of the retention period set for soft delete. This retention period is typically 14 days, but it can be configured to a different value.

During the retention period, the storage account and its data are in a soft-deleted state, meaning they can be recovered if needed.

After the retention period elapses, the storage account and its data are permanently deleted from the recovery list and cannot be recovered.

Therefore, if soft delete is enabled with a 14-day retention period for a storage account, it will take 14 days for the storage account to be permanently deleted from the recovery list. If you need to expedite the deletion process and remove the storage account immediately, you may consider disabling soft delete, if possible, to bypass the retention period.

Here are the general steps to delete a storage account from the recovery list before the retention period is completed:

Navigate to the Azure Portal.

Locate the Recovery Services Vault that contains the storage account you want to delete.

Within the Recovery Services Vault, navigate to the recovery list where the storage account is located.

Find and select the storage account that you want to delete.

Look for an option to permanently delete the storage account from the recovery list. This option may be available even if the retention period has not been completed.

I deleted the storage account through the Azure Portal using the delete button here:

When I click "Restore" it shows up. It seems like the name of the storage account (and therefore the DNS) is held for 14 days, before releasing it for other subscriptions. I want to create a storage account with the same name in the tenant of my client. But I cannot do that because it is still in the Restore list.

Hi Lukas

Unfortunately, it is not possible to create a storage account with same name in the tenant until the recovery period ends.

Please be informed that when a storage account is deleted, the name is typically held for a period of time (usually 14 days) to allow for recovery. After this period, the name should become available for reuse.

Here is a similar issue where the customer was able to create a storage account with the same name 14 days after the recovery period
