First things first: Thanks for looking into this and spending some of your valuable time with my issue.
I'm running a series of digital signage computers for a local sports club. Since a few weeks, I'm running into a super annoying issue. Here are the facts:
Set up to auto logon in Kiosk mode
Single app is Microsoft Edge
Everything worked fine for months but recently all machines after running a few hours show a popup dialog stating the following:
This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer.
Of course I've done an intense Google search prior to writing this post. I've tried all of the solutions that I could find through searching, specifically:
I'm not having any DisallowRun keys in the Registry.
Group policies for Don’t run specified Windows applications have all been at their default: Not Configured.
Since the issue occurs seemingly randomly sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after hours, I've tried to correlate to entries in the event log and found these to always appear close to around the time of the popup:
The application-specific permission settings do not grand Local Launch permission for COM Server application with CLSID [omitted for clarity] and APPIP [omitted for clarity]
Without understanding exactly what these entries technically mean, from the wording alone these sound as if they could hint to the root cause of the issue.
Can anyone help me further troubleshoot? As of right now, we otherwise have to think about using a different platform form our signage requirements, which I really would like to prevent.
Update: Upon further investigation, it appears as if the prompt comes up whenever the application is auto-restarted in Kiosk mode. Kiosk mode when using Edge has a setting, where you can force restart Edge every n minutes of inactivity. We've configured this as a safety measure to frequently restart Edge and clear up memory. I can confirm that the dreaded dialog pops up whenever Kiosk mode tries to restart the application.
