Does MS Defender protect Chrome on Windows even without the MS Defender browser protection extension installed?

Does Microsoft Defender Antivirus provide protection for the Chrome browser on Windows even without the Defender extension installed? I do not have the extension installed as it only supports the US region, and I am from outside of the US.
