What is the availability of Azure NetApp Files backups (using a Backup Vault) regarding copies across availability zones?

  1. Are the backups created in Azure NetApp Files via the Backup Vault automatically replicated across availability zones due to the storage infrastructure used to store these backups? This is particularly concerning the regions East US 2 and East Asia.
  2. Regarding Azure NetApp snapshots created through a snapshot policy, do these snapshots also have any mechanism ensuring copies across availability zones?

Hello Rob , Welcome to MS Q&A

Azure NetApp Files backups and snapshots have specific mechanisms for availability and replication across availability zones:

    Azure NetApp Files Backups:

    • Backups created via Azure NetApp Files are stored in Azure storage using Zone-Redundant Storage (ZRS), which replicates data synchronously across three Azure availability zones within the same region. This ensures that your backups are protected against zonal failures within the region. However, Azure NetApp Files backups do not support replication to a different region. This means that backups in East US 2 or East Asia will remain within their respective regions.

    Azure NetApp Snapshots:

      - Snapshots are a foundational data protection feature in Azure NetApp Files. They provide stability, scalability, and fast recoverability without impacting performance. While snapshots themselves do not automatically replicate across availability zones, they can be used as a basis for cross-zone or cross-region replication. This allows you to design for local or remote disaster recovery by replicating your Azure NetApp Files instances across specific Azure availability zones or regions.
