Hi,

i have an odd problem with a customer.

We rolled out Teams with VDI Optimization on a onprem RDS Server (Server 2022) and it works fine with a test account.

An Employee of my customer tests this with his user and when he signs on and starts Teams, Teams starts as "optimized" (showing in the left upper corner) but after a few seconds wants to restart to do some more optimizations!? hmn?

When you Hit OK, Teams restarts and is "NOT optimized" showing in a big box right to the Avatar in Teams.

No way to get that reversed other then Deleting the Folder "c:\users\username\appdata\local\packages\msteams...

i DONT have the Problem with the Testuser on the Same RDS Server nor does he have this issue so we can rule out the RDS Server itself, the Teams installation and the Client from which he connects.

I compared the connection Settings and Versions of Remote Desktop Client. Both are the Same on my Devices i use for connecting to the RDS Host and from my Customer. But as said - i basically ruled that out already.

Versions used are:

Client Connection App: Remotedesktop: 1.2.6074.0 (current)

Teams Version: 25044.2208.3471.2155

RDS Host: Server 2022 Standard with 25 RDS Licenses.

I dont get why Teams is optimized and wants to restart? If you dont restart Teams is working fine. Camera, Microphone, Speakers ... all is working, once restarted you are back to the "Remoteaudio"-sh!t which is totaly useless on an VDI Environment.

As i basically can rule out his Client Device and the RDS Server i wonder if this is something in his profile or his Teams Account that triggers this Restart and do something that is bad for optimization...

I already tried to delete the registrykeys for User that are relevant to teams, deleted the mentoined folder above several times, deleted the teams folder regarding his user under programmdata ... nothing helps.

1st start of teams is fine, teams says it need to be restarted for more optimization after that teams is not optimized until you delete the folder under appdata\local ... and everything starts from scratch.

Any Help on this? Ideas?

i can post logs if that helps...

greetings, Fabian

    Hi,

quick followup ... problem is solved.

needed to disable VDI2Optimization in the global Policy for the Tenant via PowerShell (with Teams Addon) so the actual Teams Version does want to change to SlimCore/VDI2.0 and keeps Optimization over WebRTC active.

it seems SlimCore/VDI2.0 optimization is broken for onprem RDS Servers ...

    Hi,

no, as i wrote. I had to disable this in the global Teams Policy of the Microsoft365 Tenant via PowerShell. Open a Powershell, install the Teams Addon, connect to Teams and set the Value in the Policy as needed.

    grafik

This is "enabled" per default, so the Teams - if connected with an account from that Tenant - wants to switch to VDI2.0/SlimCore which is not working with actual Teams on onprem RDS Servers.

    greetings, Fabian
