Issues migrating API Management instance

Hello Azure Community,

This past week I've tried migrating an API Management instance to another subscription on the same tenant, to afterwards move this subscription to another tenant (with the API Management instance on it by then).

What is the best / easiest way to migrate this API management instance? I've tried using the UI in the Azure Portal to move it, and this provides nothing but vague error messages (see attached) that none of us can really solve. (even though the validation step succeeds).

Thank you in advance!

    Hi Luka De Bakker,

It looks like the API Management (APIM) resource move failed due to a conflict—this can happen if there are linked resources like monitoring (e.g., diagnostic settings or action groups) still attached. These dependencies can prevent the move.

You can try one of these options to fix it:

    • Use Azure CLI or PowerShell to attempt the move, as they often provide more detailed error messages.
    • Alternatively, consider exporting your APIM configuration and recreating it in the target subscription as a workaround.

For more information, please refer to this doc: Move resources to a new subscription

I hope this addresses your query. Please let me know if you need any further assistance or clarification.
