Azure Managed Grafana plugin management - unable to list and install Synthetic Monitoring plugin? You do not have permission to install this plugin.

Unable to install the Synthetic Monitoring plugin into an Azure-managed Grafana instance.

I tried the following:

  • On the Grafana Instance > Plugin > Synthetic Monitoring. This was unsuccessful since it showed 'You do not have permission to install this plugin'. And I can't see any facility that will allow me to install it
  • On the Azure Portal > Azure-managed Grafana > Plugin Management page. This was unsuccessful too as the Synthetic Monitoring plugin is not enlisted on the page.

The Grafana instance has a workspace where the Grafana's managed identity has a Monitoring Data Reader role. I do have the same role as well, aside from being the owner of both resources.

Can someone advise how to successfully install this plugin? I am meaning to create a Proof of concept to use this plugin as an availability test facility through url pings.

    Hi Mari-Aiza Canoy

While having the Monitoring Data Reader role is necessary for accessing monitoring data, installing or managing plugins requires additional permissions. Specifically, the managed identity associated with your Grafana workspace must have the "Grafana Admin" role assignments that allow plugin management. Please ensure that these permissions are in place.

The Synthetic Monitoring plugin may not appear in the Plugin Management section of your Azure Managed Grafana instance. This is often because not all Grafana plugins are supported in the managed environment provided by Azure.

Plugin management in Azure Managed Grafana is limited compared to self-hosted Grafana instances. Some plugins may not be available for installation due to Azure's restrictions.
