I created groups with various related links/tabs within my groups, shut down my laptop and now all the groups I created are gone.

Tab groups are not persisted. Tab groups are for grouping open tabs together with optional coloring. Once the browser is closed the tab groups are gone.

I believe what you're looking for is collections. A collection is a set of tabs that are persisted across browser sessions. You can add a tab group to a collection and the tabs in that group are added to the collection.

Is there any way to recover all my grouped tabs, frustrating that I lost them all and now need to recreate my groups. I looked in history, they don't appear as recently closed. bummer.

The tabs you had opened should appear in your History window, but may or may not show up in recent if you've opened tabs since then. History is tracked for weeks back. The groups themselves are probably not going to show up though.

Yes, I realized that when I went looking in history, groups created don't show up in history, but the individual URLS do show up. Guess I need to stop using the group tabs and get accustomed to using Collections instead. Not sure why there's even a grouping option for related URLS if the groups created are just going to disappear when you shut down. The convenience is nice until you lose them all each time you shut down.
