Data Zone Standard availability timeline for o4-mini

Hi,

As Azure recently made available o4-mini for Global Standard deployment, I was wondering what was the timeline to make it available for Standard Data Zone deployment or even Standard deployment.

This could indeed be necessary for some customers for data residency issues.

As of now, the o4-mini model is available for deployment under Azure OpenAI's Global Standard and Data Zone Standard deployment types. Specifically, the Data Zone Standard deployment supports the gpt-4o-mini-2024-07-18 model, allowing for data residency within Microsoft-defined data zones, which is beneficial for customers with data residency requirements.

However, when it comes to Standard (regional) deployments, there is currently no official timeline announced for the availability of the o4-mini model. Regional access to specific models can depend on several factors, including capacity planning and compliance requirements.

We recommend monitoring the Azure “What’s New” page for the most up-to-date announcements regarding regional availability and deployment configurations.

Note that I am talking about the new o4-mini model reasoning model. (see https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/o3-and-o4-mini-unlock-enterprise-agent-workflows-with-next-level-reasoning-ai-with-azure-ai-foundry-and-github), not GPT-4o-mini, which is different.

To my knowledge (and when I try deploying it on Azure AI Foundry), o4-mini is only available with a Global Standard.

If you have any info about the timeline for o4-mini or a way to deploy it with Standard Data Zone, let me know.

Apologies for the confusion earlier. Currently, the o4-mini model is available only under the Global Standard deployment. As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding its availability in Standard (regional) Data Zone deployments.

We understand that data residency is a critical consideration for many customers. At this point, the o4-mini model does not yet support deployments tied to specific regional data zones, which may limit options for customers with strict compliance or localization requirements. Azure is likely evaluating this based on demand and regulatory needs.

I've flagged this internally as a feature request and will follow up if any updates become available. In the meantime, I recommend keeping an eye on the Azure “What’s New” page for updates on model availability and deployment options.
