Is Microsoft 365 based on a current version of Office? Do users have to have any other version of Office installed to use Microsoft 365?

I use a book publisher's programs (i.e. McGraw Hill Simnet & Cengage MindTap) for online classes at the college level. The publishers keep asking me to upgrade to newer versions of Office. If we're using Microsoft 365, isn't that the neest version available?

Usually a Microsoft 365 subscription provides you with the latest version, though some organizations are on a delayed release plan that only updates every few months. Here is the page for the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, as one example.
