External Description Missing on Unbilled Sales Actuals After Time Entry Approval or Journal Correction in D365 Project Operations

I'm working with Dynamics 365 Project Operations and have encountered a recurring issue where the External Description field is lost on unbilled sales actuals under two different scenarios:

Scenario 1 – After Time Entry Approval:

When I approve a time entry, two actuals are created automatically:

  • A cost actual – which retains the External Description correctly.
  • An unbilled sales actual – where the External Description is empty, even though no journals or corrections have been made yet.

This suggests the issue might be related to how the unbilled sales actual is generated, possibly based on the contract line or sales price list configuration.

Scenario 2 – After Correcting Actuals via Journal:

Here’s the process I follow:

  1. I create actuals.
  2. I identify a mistake and create a correction journal.
  3. I preview and confirm the correction.

After this, the new unbilled sales actual that’s generated loses the External Description, while the cost actual retains it.

Expected Behavior:

In both scenarios, the External Description should be preserved and carried over, especially for unbilled sales actuals.

Question:

Has anyone experienced this behavior or found a workaround or fix to ensure the External Description is retained for unbilled sales actuals, whether after time approval or correction via journals?

Any insights on whether this might relate to contract line setup, pricing, or customizations would be very helpful.

Happy to share screenshots or details about our D365 PO version if that would help.

Thanks in advance!
